FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE (PDF Version)

August 20, 2012 - The Coalition for Music Education in Canada, a nonprofit organization headquartered in Toronto, has been selected to receive a $235,000 grant from the Ontario Trillium Foundation. The grant will allow the Coalition to implement Wise Voices for Music™ – an outreach initiative intended to foster and support local action plans through a network of community and youth action leaders in order to strengthen music education in Ontario communities. This 3-year project will engage youth through leadership activities and encourage collaboration with local, provincial and regional organizations that focus on the value of music in our lives.

Wise Voices will engage the spectrum of multi-generational and multi-sectoral wisdom from people who share a passion for music in their lives and communities. Major components of the project are the facilitation of roundtables centred on identifying local successes, identifying gaps and solutions, and exploring strategies to ensure that learning music is integral to schools and communities. These roundtable discussions will be held in various regions across Ontario and be guided by a Project Advisory Group of related music and arts organizations. Community reports and action plans will be profiled on the Coalition’s website.

“This Wise Voices project will help celebrate our 20th anniversary of making sure that music matters for all young people. With this grant we will be able to coalesce students, educators, local businesses, policy makers and change agents in Ontario to collaborate on action to ensure that all young Ontarians will have access to learning music in their schools and communities.” – Holly Nimmons, Executive Director, Coalition for Music Education

As a result of this project, the Coalition plans to invigorate a strengthened and coordinated voice of youth action leaders for the essential value of music education in the lives of all young people.

The first roundtable event will be held in Kitchener-Waterloo, October 27th, 2012.

A leading grant-maker in Canada, the Ontario Trillium Foundation strengthens the capacity of the voluntary sector through investment in community-based initiatives. An agency of the Government of Ontario, OTF builds health and vibrant communities. For more information, please visit the website at: www.otf.ca

He will also coordinate our outreach and marketing initiatives, including our newly launched Youth Action Network. We are thrilled to be working with Spencer and look forward to strengthening our public and media awareness strategies. This will help us to more effectively achieve the Coalition’s mandate to raise the awareness and understanding of the role that music education plays in Canadian culture, and to promote the benefits that music education brings to young people.
