Did you know?

[By listening to Mozart] inner-city 2nd graders dramatically increased their standardized math scores and were performing at the same level on advanced math concepts as 4th graders from a higher socio-economic school.

WISE VOICES FOR MUSIC

The Coalition for Music Education celebrates 20 years of making sure that music matters for young people across Canada.  To help celebrate this anniversary, the Coalition launched a new initiative, intended to invigorate and support local action strategies through a network of community and youth action leaders.  Wise Voices for Music meaningfully roots our collective work for learning music in schools and communities, through effective provincial partnerships that are supported by a national movement with a strong youth component.

The Coalition is coordinating a series of roundtable discussions with community participants who represent a multi-generational and multi-sectoral perspective.  They will identify local successes to be shared as best practices, identify gaps and solutions, and explore strategies to ensure that learning music is integral to schools and communities.  Community leaders will help coordinate a local action plan with support from the Coalition.

Participants will identify issues, begin to build key messages and consider strategies to collaboratively move forward to ensure that the integral importance of learning music in our schools and communities is valued and maintained.

The core principles of the Wise Voices initiative are:

  • Celebration: Celebrate our successes and achievements in music education
  • Inquiry: Identify what’s missing through gap solution analysis
  • Discovery:  Clarify the key messages and coalesce our collective voice – what is the value of learning music? Music makes us…  Music teaches us… Music changes us….
  • Action:   Confirm next steps, local leadership and Coalition support through gathering your input on a local action plan for the community

Wise Voices Maritimes

The first Wise Voices for Music Round Table was hosted in Sydney Cape Breton on the day following the 2012 Music Monday Showcase Concert. The Sydney event brought together participants including high school and university students, school administrators, music educators, representatives from post-secondary institutions, the music industry, and festival and events organizations. Cape Breton was a unique place to host such an event because of the strong music industry, the rich culture that values the importance of music in daily life, and because of the non-competitive attitude that exists amongst professional and emerging artists.  In addition, the Cape Breton-Victoria Regional School Board has one of the strongest school music programs in the country with a range of program offerings and specialist music teachers in every school.
